Gov’t pays first-quarter allowances to traditional leaders – Rita Odoley Sowah

The government has disbursed first-quarter allowances to all traditional leaders across the country, with payments for the second quarter expected to be processed soon.

This was disclosed by the Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development in charge of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, during the launch of the 2025 Ghana Chieftaincy Awards in Accra on Thursday, July 17, 2025.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Minister said the gesture reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening the role of traditional authorities in national development.

“These awards must ignite a deeper national conversation: How do we harness the moral authority, cultural wisdom, and strategic position of our traditional leaders to shape a better Ghana?” she asked. “How do we empower them in meaningful ways—not only for ceremony but to drive real impact?”

She added, “ I would say that, as a ministry and through the leadership of the President, the government has ensured that the first-quarter allowances for traditional leaders have been duly disbursed.”

The Ghana Chieftaincy Awards seeks to recognize outstanding contributions by traditional rulers to peacebuilding, development, and cultural preservation.
