The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its preparedness to maintain law and order ahead of today’s parliamentary rerun in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.
The Electoral Commission is today, Friday, July 11, conducting the parliamentary rerun following unresolved verification issues during the December 2024 general elections. The results from 18 out of 37 disputed polling stations had already been certified, but the remaining 19 required a fresh vote to complete the collation process.
In a statement dated Thursday, July 10, the Accra Regional Police Command detailed a series of security measures to ensure a peaceful and transparent election process.
According to the statement, police will deploy personnel to all nineteen (19) polling stations designated by the Electoral Commission (EC) for the rerun, officers will also monitor both vehicular and pedestrian traffic in and around voting areas.
The Police have appealed to the public to cooperate fully with security personnel, comply with electoral regulations, and help maintain peace throughout the election.
The rerun has been marred by political tension, with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) alleging that the EC’s decision was influenced by political pressure and biased in favour of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The party described the rerun as illegitimate and officially announced a boycott.
However, in a surprising twist, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, is participating in the rerun—despite her party’s opposition.
At a press briefing on Thursday, July 10, Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chair of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, dismissed the allegations of political interference, reaffirming the Commission’s independence.
The Ablekuma North Constituency has remained without a Member of Parliament since the 2024 elections due to the unresolved dispute.
The EC says today’s rerun is intended to bring closure to the matter and ensure the constituency regains parliamentary representation.
