New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has defended his emphasis on digitalisation during the lead-up to the 2024 general elections, insisting that technology has become central to economic growth and global competitiveness.
He argued that countries that fail to establish the digital infrastructure needed to participate in the changing global economy risk being left behind.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Tokyo, Japan, Dr. Bawumia rejected suggestions that he avoided discussions on the economy during the election campaign, explaining that his focus on digitalisation was informed by the growing importance of technology in economic development.
“Many people don’t understand that the world economy is now digital. The world economy is digital. If you don’t go digital, you cannot prosper in this global economy. You cannot. And if you don’t take your time and put your digital framework together, you’ll be left behind,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia maintained that digitalisation should not be treated as a narrow technology agenda but as a critical foundation for countries seeking to compete in the modern global economy.
His comments revisit one of the central themes of his campaign ahead of the 2024 general elections, when he placed significant emphasis on digital transformation as part of his economic vision.
The former Vice-President’s remarks in Japan reinforce his argument that investment in digital infrastructure and the adoption of technology are essential to positioning Ghana for economic opportunities in an increasingly digital world.
