The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the removal of the heads of four state security institutions over what it describes as a growing pattern of drug trafficking incidents involving Ghana, both locally and internationally.

The party says 14 major drug seizures have been recorded between March 2025 and October 2026, with seven of the incidents occurring in Ghana and involving approximately 3.6 tonnes of narcotics. It further claims that seizures linked to Ghanaian routes abroad have exceeded 12 tonnes, with an estimated street value of between US$1.3 billion and US$1.7 billion.

In a statement delivered by its Second National Vice Chairman, Henry Nana Boakye, the NPP argued that the incidents point to serious weaknesses in the country’s security and drug enforcement systems.

“This is not a run of bad luck. It is a pattern.”

Among the cases cited by the party are the June 2025 seizure of 4,500 kilogrammes of drugs concealed in wood in Amsterdam, the November 2025 interception of 2,829 kilogrammes hidden in cassava flour in Antwerp, and a further 1,158 kilogrammes seized in Antwerp in December 2025.

The statement also referenced the September 2026 seizure of 3.9 tonnes of narcotics concealed in plastic waste in Dunkirk, France, as well as the recent interception of 46.7 kilogrammes of cocaine in Beirut, Lebanon, on October 31, 2026.

Other incidents cited include the seizure of 320 kilogrammes of illicit drugs concealed in charcoal in Australia in April 2026, reportedly valued at US$210 million, and the arrest of a South African national at OR Tambo International Airport in September 2026 after arriving from Accra with heroin.

The NPP also raised concerns about the investigation into the Dunkirk shipment, which reportedly led to the arrest of 10 people, including four Customs officers. Four Ghanaians have been charged in connection with the case, among them a suspect identified as Musah Attah, also known as Kromo, while a Dutch suspect is reportedly still at large.

The party questioned how Kromo allegedly gained access to the security cordon surrounding the President and Vice-President, demanding clarification on the circumstances that allowed such access.

It further called for the publication of details of all diplomatic and service passports issued since January 2025, arguing that such disclosure would help address concerns about the possible misuse of official travel documents.

The party has also turned its attention to the direct shipping arrangement between Tema and Cartagena, agreed in March 2026. It wants the government to disclose details of cargo transported under the arrangement and suspend it pending a comprehensive security review.

The NPP is demanding the removal of the heads of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), and National Security. It argues that the repeated incidents require institutional accountability and a review of the country’s anti-drug enforcement framework.

The party has also called for a bipartisan parliamentary inquiry into the reported seizures, a dedicated task force with a clear operational roadmap, and the prosecution of any airport officials found to have accepted bribes to facilitate the movement of narcotics.

It wants authorities to provide regular updates on the investigation into the Dunkirk shipment, including the status of the suspects and the alleged involvement of persons connected to the case.

The statement also questioned the government’s commitment to its economic transformation agenda in the face of the reported trafficking incidents.

“The President promised Ghanaians a 24-hour economy. He did not promise a 24-hour cocaine corridor.”

The NPP insists that the government must move beyond public assurances and demonstrate accountability through investigations, prosecutions and reforms aimed at preventing Ghana’s transport and security infrastructure from being exploited by international drug trafficking networks.
