The Greater Accra Regional Peace Council has raised concerns over an escalating social media confrontation between young people from the Tema and Nungua traditional areas, warning that online exchanges are threatening peace and security in the region.
The Council said the growing exchanges among the youth over the ongoing dispute concerning the ownership of land and the Meridian Rock could heighten tensions between the two communities if not contained.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the Council described the situation as an emerging threat to peaceful coexistence, particularly as the disagreement increasingly attracts attention on social media.
“The GARPC is more concerned about the escalating media war among the youth from traditional areas on social media, which is increasing tensions and threatening peace and security in the region,” the statement said.
The Council warned that the dispute should not be allowed to spill over into confrontational online activities capable of deepening divisions between the two traditional areas.
It consequently urged the chiefs and people of Tema and Nungua to exercise restraint and remain calm while efforts are made to resolve the disagreement.
“The Peace Council would like to urge both parties to exercise restraint and remain calm while working towards an amicable resolution of the dispute,” it stated.
The Council also called on stakeholders to support dialogue, negotiations and reconciliation, stressing that a peaceful settlement remained necessary to prevent further tensions.
It reaffirmed its commitment to promoting discussions between the feuding parties and finding a lasting resolution to the disagreement.
The Tema-Nungua disagreement centres on a boundary dispute involving land and the Meridian Rock, an area associated with the historical settlement of Tema.
The dispute has generated public attention, particularly following tensions over redevelopment activities at the former Meridian Hotel site.
