A Spanish second-division football match between CD Tenerife and FC Andorra ended in tragedy after Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel died from injuries sustained in a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono.
The 30-year-old forward was involved in the incident during the closing stages of Monday’s match, which was level at 2-2, when Owono raced out of his goal to deal with a long ball near the halfway line.
As De Miguel attempted to reach the ball, the goalkeeper’s knee struck him heavily, leaving the striker motionless on the pitch.
Medical personnel immediately rushed to his aid, while players from both teams watched in distress. Some of De Miguel’s team-mates were visibly emotional as he received treatment for several minutes before being taken to hospital by ambulance.
The referee initially showed Owono a red card for the challenge before abandoning the match.
De Miguel was admitted to intensive care, with his condition initially described as stable but serious. However, Tenerife announced on Tuesday that he had died after his condition worsened.
“Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda,” the club said.
Spanish media reported that the forward suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated by paramedics while being transported to hospital.
The incident prompted an outpouring of grief from the football community, with FC Andorra issuing a message of condolence to De Miguel’s family, team-mates and club.
Former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, who co-owns Andorra, also paid tribute, writing: “I am so sorry with all my soul. Rest in peace, Jesus.”
The Spanish football federation subsequently announced the postponement of Tuesday’s Copa del Rey fixtures following the player’s death.
