Residents of Damang in the Western Region have commended Ibrahim Mahama and the management of Damang Gold Mine for road construction projects in the community, while appealing for more employment opportunities for women and graduates
The residents said they had witnessed positive changes in the community within six months of the mine operating under its new management, expressing hope that the ongoing development efforts would continue to improve living conditions.
Their views were shared during a special edition of Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen programme in Tarkwa on Thursday, October 22, 2026.
One resident praised the mine’s management for the improvements but urged sub-contractors working with the company to create more opportunities for National Service personnel.
The resident argued that young graduates should be given the chance to gain practical work experience at the mine rather than being posted mainly to government institutions.
Another resident commended Ibrahim Mahama, Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners, for supporting road construction in the area.
According to the resident, travelling from Damang to Kumasi had previously been difficult and exhausting, but the road improvements had made the journey easier.
The residents expressed hope that the projects would continue to improve transportation and support economic activities in the community.
Despite their appreciation for the development projects, residents urged the mine’s management to employ more women so they could also benefit from the opportunities created by its operations.
They said expanding employment opportunities for women, National Service personnel and other local people could improve livelihoods, strengthen household incomes and equip young graduates with valuable skills.
The appeals highlight residents’ expectations that the benefits of mining operations should extend beyond infrastructure development to include broader access to jobs and professional experience.
Damang Gold Mine was transferred to Engineers and Planners following a competitive tender process after the previous operator’s lease expired.
The formal handover took place on April 18, 2026.
The residents’ comments reflect growing expectations that the mine’s operations will continue to deliver tangible benefits to its host community.
While the road projects have attracted praise, residents say greater attention should also be given to ensuring that women, National Service personnel and other local residents have access to employment opportunities as operations progress.
