Swedish coach Kim Lars Björkegren will take temporary charge of the Black Stars for their November international fixtures as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) continues its search for a permanent head coach.
Björkegren, who currently coaches Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, will lead the men’s team in their two 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Somalia.
He will be assisted by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram for the double-header, with both matches scheduled to be played in Ghana on November 11 and 15.
The Black Stars will be seeking their first victory in the qualifying campaign after suffering defeats in their opening two Group C matches.
Ghana lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before suffering a disappointing 4-2 defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The poor results led to the mutual termination of Carlos Queiroz’s contract and prompted the GFA to establish a five-member committee to identify his successor.
The committee, chaired by former GFA Vice-President Fred Pappoe, was expected to submit its recommendation by October 15.
However, the recruitment process has continued following the receipt of numerous applications for the vacant position.
Björkegren is no stranger to the Black Stars setup, having previously served as an assistant coach before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He was subsequently left out of the technical team following Otto Addo’s departure and Queiroz’s appointment.
He has since continued his coaching duties with the Black Queens.
His temporary assignment with the Black Stars is expected to end after the Somalia fixtures, after which he will return to the women’s team ahead of the first phase of the 2027 Women’s World Cup qualifying playoffs, scheduled to begin on November 28.
The tight schedule leaves Björkegren with just 13 days between the Black Stars’ second match against Somalia and the start of the Black Queens’ playoff campaign.
For now, his immediate priority will be to guide Ghana to maximum points against Somalia and revive the Black Stars’ hopes of qualifying for the 2027 AFCON.
