The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has paid promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears to 56,003 teachers of the Ghana Education Service (GES), completing payments ahead of the October 16, 2026 deadline agreed with teacher unions.
In an update on the payments, CAGD disclosed that 49,725 teachers received their money on October 15, together with their October salaries. The payments covered salary adjustments and arrears dating back to January 1, 2026.
An additional 6,278 teachers received their payments in September 2026, bringing the total number of teachers paid to 56,003.
The payment exercise follows an agreement reached between government representatives and teacher unions at a meeting held at the Ministry of Education on October 2, 2026.
The completion of the payments comes ahead of the October 16 deadline agreed upon by the parties, following discussions over the outstanding promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears.
CAGD said it had completed payments for teachers whose records met the necessary payroll requirements.
“CAGD has therefore completed payment for all teachers whose submitted records met the payroll requirements,” the department stated.
The department explained that payments were made after the submitted records had undergone verification to ensure they met the requirements for inclusion on the payroll.
Although 56,003 teachers have received their payments, the figures released by CAGD indicate that the processing of all reported promoted teachers is not yet complete.
Of the approximately 80,000 teachers reported to have been promoted, GES processed and submitted supporting documents for 56,633 teachers.
CAGD verified and paid 56,003 of those cases, while 630 remain pending because of issues identified during the verification process.
The outstanding cases require GES to resolve the identified issues before the affected teachers can be paid.
A further 23,367 teachers are yet to have their cases processed and the relevant supporting documents submitted by GES.
The department has assured affected teachers that it remains committed to processing outstanding eligible payments once the required documentation and corrections are completed.
“The Department remains committed to processing outstanding eligible payments promptly once the necessary corrections are made or complete and accurate documents are received and verified,” CAGD said.
The department also expressed appreciation to GES, teacher unions, and the ministries and agencies involved for their cooperation throughout the process.
The latest figures provide an update on the payment of promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears, while the remaining cases depend on the submission of outstanding records and the resolution of verification issues.
