The Deputy Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Dr Sheila Addo, has called for greater opportunities for women to occupy leadership positions, stressing the importance of professional competence, preparation and self-confidence in career advancement.
She made the call on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at the opening of the 7th Africa Public Sector Conference and Awards (APSCA 2026) in Accra.
Speaking at the Women, Governance and Trade Forum, Dr Addo highlighted the challenges women face in securing senior leadership positions, particularly in institutions where men continue to dominate executive roles.
She urged organisations to create more opportunities for qualified women to take up leadership responsibilities, while encouraging women to build the confidence and professional capabilities needed to advance their careers.
According to her, competence and adequate preparation are essential for women seeking to assume greater responsibilities in both the public and private sectors.
The three-day conference, scheduled to end October 16, is being held under the theme, “Governance 2030: Resilient Institutions for a Digital, Green & Secure Africa.”
The event brings together senior government officials, policymakers, regulators and public sector executives from across Africa to discuss strategies for strengthening public institutions, improving service delivery and addressing emerging technological, environmental and security challenges.
Dr Addo’s participation provided the NPA with an opportunity to contribute to discussions on effective governance, institutional development and inclusive leadership across the continent.
The conference also serves as a platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas on building resilient public institutions capable of responding to Africa’s evolving development needs.
