President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for what he described as the turnaround of Ghana’s economy within a short period.
Speaking at the Accra Reset: Full Circle – Making Global Development Work Again event in New York on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81), Dangote said the development of Ghana’s economy demonstrated the importance of trust in economic management.
“This has actually shown that money follows trust,” Dangote said.
According to Dangote, Ghana’s economic situation was previously difficult, but President Mahama’s approach had helped restore confidence in the economy.
“It wasn’t a very good case, but when he came in, he didn’t do any magic. He’s not a magician, but he did the right things. And people really have a lot of trust in him,” he said.
“And that’s why Ghana’s economy turned around. Excellency, I must really congratulate you.”
Dangote said the confidence generated by the government’s economic management was important in attracting investment and supporting economic recovery.
The comments come as the Mahama administration continues to emphasise economic stabilisation and investor confidence as key components of its economic reset agenda.
President Mahama has said the government is moving from economic stabilisation to job creation following improvements in key economic indicators.
At the Accra Reset event, Mahama also stressed the need for Ghana to strengthen its access to the wider African market as part of efforts to drive industrialisation and economic transformation.
The 81st United Nations General Assembly is being held in New York under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.”
The assembly has brought together world leaders, policymakers, business leaders and other stakeholders to discuss global economic development, international cooperation and challenges confronting the world.
