Ghana’s Free Primary Healthcare initiative is bringing essential health services closer to underserved communities as part of efforts to build a more accessible and equitable healthcare system.
The initiative was highlighted during a press briefing organised by the Ministry of Health, led by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, where various health-sector agencies including the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) led by Adwoa Oboubia Darko -Opoku outlined their contributions to Ghana’s ongoing healthcare transformation.
The GMTF has emphasised the importance of collaboration in expanding access to quality healthcare, particularly for communities that face challenges accessing essential medical services.
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening financing for specialised healthcare.
The Fund is particularly focused on supporting patients dealing with chronic and costly illnesses, which often place significant financial burdens on individuals and families.
The Ministry said the combined efforts of government, health-sector institutions and other stakeholders are aimed at creating a healthcare system that is more responsive to the needs of citizens.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve access to healthcare and ensure that quality medical services are available to Ghanaians, regardless of their location or economic circumstances.
