The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has withdrawn its proposal to acquire approximately three acres of land belonging to the Department of Parks and Gardens at Cantonments in Accra for the construction of its permanent headquarters.
The decision follows public criticism of the proposed arrangement, which would have seen GoldBod acquire the land in exchange for financing and constructing new facilities for Parks and Gardens.
In a letter dated Friday, September 4, 2026, GoldBod Chief Executive Officer, Samuel Gyamfi, formally informed the Director-General of the Department of Parks and Gardens that the proposal had been withdrawn.
Mr Gyamfi said an earlier proposal contained in a letter dated August 20, 2026, should no longer be considered.
“We wish to formally withdraw the said proposal forthwith.
Accordingly, the proposal contained in our letter of August 20, 2026 should be considered withdrawn, and the matter closed,” he stated.
GoldBod had initially sought about three acres of the Cantonments property to establish a purpose-built headquarters to accommodate its expanding administrative, technical, commercial, regulatory and operational functions.
Under the proposed arrangement, GoldBod offered to finance and construct a new administrative office complex for Parks and Gardens, as well as provide logistical and other supporting facilities to be agreed upon by the two institutions.
The proposal was presented as a mutually beneficial arrangement that would provide improved infrastructure for both institutions while allowing the land to be used for what GoldBod described as strategic institutional purposes.
However, the plan generated significant public opposition, with concerns raised over the proposed use of land belonging to Parks and Gardens.
Following the backlash, GoldBod has now formally discontinued the arrangement.
In its latest correspondence, Mr Gyamfi expressed appreciation to the Department of Parks and Gardens for its cooperation and engagement throughout discussions on the proposal.
The withdrawal effectively ends the proposed transfer or acquisition arrangement involving the Cantonments land.
