Ghana has removed its wholesale 5G exclusivity framework to increase competition in the high-speed mobile broadband market.

Minister for Communication, Technology and Innovation Sam George announced this on the Accountability Series on Monday, September 7, 2026.

He said the change followed a major review of Ghana’s 5G policy by the National Communications Authority (NCA).

“This year, the National Communications Authority undertook the most significant reform of Ghana’s 5G policy in recent years.”

Mr George said the NCA Board approved the removal of the wholesale 5G exclusivity framework on July 15, 2026.

He said the decision followed regulatory, economic and legal assessments.

“Following comprehensive regulatory, economic, and legal assessments, the board of the NCA approved on 15th July 2026 the removal of the wholesale 5G exclusivity framework that had constrained competition in high-speed mobile broadbands.”

According to the minister, the previous framework had limited competition in Ghana’s high-speed broadband market.

Its removal is expected to give more players an opportunity to compete in the 5G market.

Mr George also disclosed that the NCA had opened applications for spectrum in the 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz and 3 GHz bands.

The spectrum will provide additional opportunities for operators to expand their broadband services.

The move is also expected to support further investment in Ghana’s telecommunications sector.

Mr George said the government’s 5G reforms are aimed at creating a more competitive market and improving access to high-speed internet services.
