Majority Leader in Parliament, James Agalga, has urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to thoroughly investigate the recent clash between Mount Sinai Senior High School and Okuapemman Senior High School and take firm measures to prevent violence in second-cycle schools.

His call follows the recent confrontation between students of Mount Sinai SHS and Okuapemman SHS, which has renewed concerns about student violence and discipline in senior high schools.

Speaking on the issue, Mr. Agalga said such incidents are not new but stressed the need for authorities to investigate their causes and take steps to prevent future occurrences.

“They are not isolated incidents. I mean, even when we were in school, I mean, we heard about incidences where schools fought amongst themselves. But I believe that the Ghana Education Service must thoroughly investigate the circumstances that led to those clashes, identify students who probably are not well disciplined, and exact measures that would forestall the future reoccurrence of violence in our second cycle schools.”

Mr. Agalga said the GES investigation should establish the circumstances that led to the Mount Sinai and Okuapemman clash and identify students whose conduct may have contributed to the incident.

He also called for appropriate disciplinary measures to deter students from engaging in violence and ensure that similar confrontations do not recur.

He stressed that authorities must move beyond reacting to incidents after they occur and put measures in place to prevent school violence in the first place.
