The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has rescued 1,055 West African nationals, mostly Nigeriens, from suspected forced begging operations in parts of the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions.
The rescue operation also involved 662 children, who were among those found engaged in or exposed to forced begging.
The GIS has reportedly detained some suspected Ghanaian agents believed to be facilitating the activities as investigations into the operations continue.
In a significant development during the operation, one of the rescued women safely delivered a baby girl on the same day she was rescued.
The operation highlights growing concerns over human trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable persons, particularly children and foreign nationals, through organised begging activities.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of human trafficking and exploitation.
Ghanaians are being encouraged to say NO to human trafficking and support efforts to protect vulnerable persons from exploitation.
