A potential public health crisis has been averted at Awakpeta in the Ho Municipality of the Volta after residents reportedly collected frozen chicken that had been illegally discarded in the area, with some taking portions home for processing, consumption and possible sale.
The incident raised concerns among health authorities over the potential risks associated with the consumption or distribution of the improperly discarded poultry.
Following reports of the incident, Environmental Health officials, in collaboration with personnel from the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), conducted a house-to-house operation in the community.
The exercise was aimed at locating and confiscating portions of the discarded frozen chicken that had been collected by residents.
Officials reportedly searched several homes as part of efforts to prevent the poultry from entering the food chain and potentially exposing members of the public to health risks.
Authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation and take appropriate measures to ensure that the illegally discarded poultry is safely disposed of and does not find its way into markets or homes for consumption.
