Motorists and commuters using the Kaneshie corridor in Accra are set to face temporary traffic restrictions as construction begins on drainage infrastructure under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project.
The Ministry of Works and Housing announced the traffic management measures during the launch of a media sensitisation campaign on the project, which will affect traffic movement along the westbound section of the Dota-Busia Highway at Kaneshie.
The ministry said the restrictions are necessary to create room for construction while ensuring the safety and movement of motorists and pedestrians.
“We know there will be inconveniences, but we want strong institutional collaboration,” the ministry said.
The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has been engaged to manage traffic throughout the period of the road closures.
MTTD officers will work with the contractor and city guards from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly to regulate traffic and manage diversions.
Road users will be directed through designated alternative routes using directional signs to be installed across affected areas.
The ministry is also rolling out a public education campaign across multiple media platforms and in Ghanaian languages to ensure motorists, commuters and residents understand the traffic arrangements.
It has appealed to road users to avoid the affected corridors where possible and use the designated alternative routes.
“We recognize that these temporary traffic restrictions may result in inconveniences and longer travel times,” the ministry said.
It added that the disruption would be temporary and necessary to facilitate the construction of permanent drainage infrastructure aimed at reducing perennial flooding in the area.
