New Patriotic Party(NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed confidence in the leadership of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and urged the Minority Caucus to intensify its efforts to demand accountability over reported losses arising from the operations of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and the Bank of Ghana.
Dr Bawumia made the remarks during a meeting with Mr Afenyo-Markin at the Minority Leader’s private residence in Accra on Monday morning.
The meeting focused on internal party matters and the agenda of the Minority Caucus ahead of Parliament’s reconvening for an emergency sitting convened by the Speaker.
According to Mr Afenyo-Markin, Dr Bawumia urged the Minority to remain focused on what he described as a loss of more than $1.7 billion, equivalent to about 1.5 per cent of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), allegedly arising from operations under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
He said Dr Bawumia cited an August 2026 report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as confirmation of the figure and cautioned the Minority against being distracted from the issue.
Dr Bawumia, according to the Minority Leader, called on the Caucus to use all available parliamentary procedures to ensure that the government accounts to Ghanaians over the reported loss.
He also commended the Minority for its efforts in pursuing the matter and reaffirmed his confidence in Mr Afenyo-Markin’s leadership.
Mr Afenyo-Markin assured the NPP flagbearer that the Minority would continue to pursue the matter in what he described as a national interest.
He said the reported loss would remain firmly on the Minority’s agenda as Parliament resumes its work.
“This is a national task the Minority intends to prosecute to the fullest extent of our ability, with the very best of intentions, and minded always by the interests of the Ghanaian people,” he stated.
Mr Afenyo-Markin maintained that the Minority would remain resolute in its demand for explanations concerning the operations of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
He said the Caucus would not relent until the Ghanaian public received answers regarding the reported financial loss.
