Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru constiteuncy in the Eastern Region, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has raised questions over the government’s reported expenditure of almost GHS11 billion on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway in 2025, with critics demanding clarity on how the funds were utilised.
The MP, who described the reported expenditure as “ridiculous and preposterous,” argued that the project is yet to reach the stage where a contractor has been selected to undertake the major engineering and civil works.
According to him, the government and Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson must provide detailed explanations to Ghanaians on the allocation and use of the funds, given the Finance Ministry’s role in overseeing expenditure on flagship government projects.
He questioned how such a significant amount could have been spent on a project where the military was still undertaking activities related to the clearing of the Right of Way.
“Which contractor or agency were these monies paid to and when exactly were these monies paid to them?” he asked, insisting that the expenditure line item raises legitimate concerns requiring answers from government.
The MP raised these concerns in a statement shared on his Facebook wall.
The MP further called for transparency on the specific components of the project that received funding, the beneficiaries of the payments and the timelines within which the alleged expenditures were made.
