The family of the late Apostle Emeritus Kwadwo Safo has publicly rejected claims by Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Akofena, to the leadership of the Kristo Asafo Mission, insisting that former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo remains the recognised Head of the Safo family.
The development comes amid growing tensions over the succession of the late founder of the church and follows a shooting incident on Sunday that reportedly left Adwoa Safo injured.
According to the family, attempts to install Israel “Akofena” Safo as leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission do not have their endorsement. They maintain that Adwoa Safo is the legitimate head of the family and should be accorded the recognition and authority associated with that position.
The succession dispute has intensified in recent weeks, with conflicting claims over the leadership of the church following the death of Apostle Kwadwo Safo in September 2025.
The matter is also the subject of legal proceedings, as some church members have challenged the legitimacy of the succession process in court.
The family made this known in a statement dated Monday June 22, 2026
Meanwhile, police investigations into Sunday’s incident at a church property in Kwabenya are ongoing.
The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of six private security guards in connection with the shooting incident.
A subsequent search operation led to the retrieval of several firearms, including pump-action guns, a pistol, ammunition and communication equipment.
Police said the suspects and the recovered exhibits have been transferred to the Police Headquarters to assist with investigations, while efforts continue to identify and apprehend other individuals who may have been involved.
The incident has attracted significant public attention, deepening concerns about the leadership dispute within the Kristo Asafo Mission and its implications for the church and the Safo family.
Authorities have assured the public that investigations will be conducted thoroughly to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine any criminal liability.
