The government has announced that President John Dramani Mahama will appoint new Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission following the exit of two senior officials from the electoral management body.
Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed on Monday that Deputy Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Bossman Eric Asare has resigned, while fellow Deputy Chairperson Samuel Tettey has retired.
According to him, Dr. Bossman Asare has formally written to the President indicating that he will step down effective July 31, 2026, to return to academia at the University of Ghana.
“Regarding Dr. Bossman Asare, I can also confirm that he has submitted a letter to His Excellency the President indicating that effective 31st July 2026, he would resign his position as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said.
He added that Dr. Asare explained his decision as a desire to resume his academic career, noting his appreciation to the President and the people of Ghana for the opportunity to serve.
The Minister further disclosed that the process to replace Mr. Samuel Tettey is already underway, indicating that a nominee has been submitted to the Council of State for consideration.
“Indeed, the Council of State has already been given a nominee whom they are considering, and once that process is completed, an announcement will be made in terms of the replacement for Mr. Tettey,” he stated.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu also indicated that a separate process will later be initiated to appoint a replacement for Dr. Bossman Asare.
Dr. Bossman Asare and Samuel Tettey served as deputies to EC Chairperson Jean Mensa and were part of the leadership that supervised the 2024 general elections, which brought the opposition National Democratic Congress back to power after eight years.
