The Ministry of Education has applauded the University for Development Studies (UDS) football team for etching their name into history as the first African university to win gold at the World University Games.
The Tamale-based side stunned defending champions Paulista University of Brazil 2-1 in a thrilling final at the 2025 edition of the Games in Dalian, China — a victory described by the Ministry as a triumph of discipline, resilience, and teamwork.
In a statement issued on behalf of the Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, the Ministry highlighted the significance of the win, calling it a “beacon of hope” that demonstrates what determination and unity can achieve.
“Every pass, every goal, and every sacrifice on the field reflected not only your pursuit of victory but also the spirit of Ghana and the enduring character of our people,” the statement read.
The Ministry stressed that UDS’s success had not only brought glory to Ghana but also elevated Africa’s image on the global sporting stage, serving as an inspiration for young athletes across the continent.
The FISU World University Games, regarded as the Olympics for university athletes, brings together student-athletes from across the globe every two years. UDS’s victory marks the first time an African university has lifted the football title in the competition’s history.
The Ministry further assured Ghanaians that the feat had reaffirmed its commitment to revamping sports at the secondary and tertiary levels to unearth more talent capable of excelling on the world stage.
