Heavy rainfall that began late Sunday, June 28, and continued into the morning of Monday, June 29, 2026, has caused widespread flooding across parts of Accra, disrupting traffic, submerging major roads, and leaving commuters stranded during the morning rush hour.
Several low-lying communities and key arterial routes were affected as floodwaters accumulated after hours of continuous downpour. Motorists were seen navigating through submerged sections of roads at reduced speeds, while others were forced to abandon their routes entirely due to rising water levels.
The flooding significantly worsened Monday morning traffic, with residents reporting major delays as they struggled to reach workplaces and schools amid waterlogged streets and heavy congestion.
Areas affected include sections of the University of Ghana N1 Highway, Apenkwa toward Tesano, the Accra–Kasoa stretch, Weija, Mallam, Achimota, Spintex, Atomic in Madina, Kaneshie, Darkuman Junction, and parts of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Amassaman among other surrounding communities.
In addition to transport disruptions, some homes and shops in flood-prone neighborhoods were inundated, forcing residents and business owners to move belongings to safer locations as water levels rose.
Authorities have advised motorists to avoid driving through flooded roads and urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and take precautionary measures, including relocating to higher ground where necessary.
