The Jomoro Responsible Cooperative Mining Scheme (COMSDEP) is set to be officially inaugurated on June 27, 2026, at Apatase in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region as part of efforts to promote responsible and sustainable small-scale mining practices in Ghana.
The event is expected to bring together government officials, traditional leaders, mining stakeholders, and community members to mark the launch of the initiative, which aims to support cooperative mining while ensuring environmental protection and community development.
President John Dramani Mahama is expected to attend as the Special Guest of Honour.
He will be joined by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who will play a key role in the inauguration ceremony.
Other dignitaries expected at the event include Joseph Nelson, Western Regional Minister; Dorcas Affo-Toffey, Deputy Minister for Transport and Member of Parliament for Jomoro; and Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, National Coordinator of the initiative.
The scheme is expected to provide a structured framework for cooperative mining operations, enhance compliance with mining regulations, create employment opportunities, and promote environmentally responsible mining practices within host communities.
Organisers say the launch represents a significant step in the government’s broader agenda to formalise the small-scale mining sector, improve livelihoods, and ensure that mineral resources contribute meaningfully to local and national development.
The inauguration ceremony is scheduled to commence at 10:00 a.m. at Apatase in the Jomoro Municipality.
