The Manhyia District Police Command has detained two men following an intelligence-led operation that uncovered a large quantity of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs at the Asawase Market in Kumasi.
The operation, carried out on July 21, 2026, led to the recovery of 100 compressed parcels of dried leaves believed to be narcotics. Police say the items were concealed inside fertiliser sacks mixed with second-hand clothing in an attempt to disguise their contents.
The suspects, identified as 37-year-old Osman Bassein and 38-year-old Mohammed Abdul-Razak, were arrested after officers acted on information that suspected drugs were being transported through the area.
According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, a team led by the Manhyia District Commander, with support from personnel of the Manhyia Divisional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and Zongo Police Station, carried out the operation and intercepted the consignment.
A search conducted in the presence of independent witnesses uncovered 13 fertiliser sacks containing the hidden parcels. Police documented the recovered items and secured them for forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
The two suspects remain in police custody and are assisting investigators while authorities work to establish further details surrounding the case. The Police have also thanked the public for providing information that supported the operation and urged citizens to continue reporting suspicious activities through the official emergency channels.
