NPP urges members to stay focused on holding government accountable

The Director of Communications of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has urged party members to remain disciplined and focus on holding the John Mahama administration accountable, amid what he describes as increasing arrests of opposition figures.

In a statement issued on July 23, Mr. Ahiagbah alleged that the arrests of opposition members by the government have become increasingly frequent and appear to form part of a broader effort to intimidate and weaken political opponents.

He called on President John Dramani Mahama to discourage what he described as the arrest and harassment of NPP members, while cautioning party supporters against actions that could shift public attention away from issues affecting Ghanaians.

According to him, the opposition should remain focused on matters such as the rising cost of living, youth unemployment, concerns about judicial independence and governance, and what he said was the government’s failure to fulfil key manifesto promises.

Mr. Ahiagbah argued that these are the issues that resonate most with Ghanaians and should remain at the centre of public discourse.

He further advised party members to avoid insults and inflammatory rhetoric, saying such conduct weakens the opposition’s message and provides the government with an opportunity to divert attention from its performance.

Instead, he urged members to rely on facts, evidence and disciplined advocacy in scrutinising the government’s actions.

Mr. Ahiagbah reiterated the NPP’s commitment to holding the Mahama administration accountable while advocating for what he described as the interests and expectations of Ghanaians.
