The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has fired the starting gun for its 2026 presidential primaries, announcing an official GH₵600,000 price tag for aspirants vying to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

In a statement released Tuesday, July 29, and signed by General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, the party confirmed that nominations are now open and will run until Thursday, August 28, 2025.

Presidential hopefuls must pay GH₵100,000 to access nomination forms and an additional GH₵500,000 as a filing fee — both non-refundable and payable by banker’s draft to the NPP’s national headquarters in Accra.

A yet-to-be-announced “development levy” will also be imposed, with the figure to be set by the party’s National Council.

Forms can be collected in person from the Office of the General Secretary throughout the nomination period.

“Nominations for the position of the Party’s Presidential Candidate shall open on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 and close on Thursday, August 28, 2025. Nominations Forms may be obtained from the Office of the General Secretary at the Party Headquarters, Asylum Down, within the Nomination period.”

The nomination process is in line with Article 13 of the NPP’s constitution, and signals the party’s early drive to prepare for the next election cycle — three years ahead of the national vote.

Meanwhile, the party has temporarily suspended all presidential campaign activities to focus fully on the Akwatia by-election, which has become a priority following the death of the area’s MP.

Among the names expected to join the presidential race are former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, Bosomtwe MP and former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former Agric Minister Dr. Bryan Acheampong.

The NPP will hold its National Delegates Congress to elect a flagbearer on January 31, 2026.
