NPP orders Ken Agyapong to retract and apologise for Afari Military Hospital remarks

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has petitioned the party’s General Secretary, urging disciplinary action against former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, over conduct he says undermines party unity and efforts to rebuild ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The petition, submitted on June 18 by Charles Opoku, Deputy National TESCON Coordinator for the New Juaben South Constituency, accuses Mr. Agyapong of repeatedly making public comments that target fellow party members and contradict official party positions.

According to the petitioner, such remarks have negatively affected the party’s public image and breach provisions of the NPP constitution, which require members to demonstrate loyalty and protect the reputation of the party.

A central issue raised in the petition concerns Mr. Agyapong’s comments on the Afari Military Hospital project.

Mr. Opoku alleges that the former presidential aspirant unfairly criticised the NPP Minority Caucus and made statements that misrepresented the party’s role in the project’s development.

The petition also references “The Base,” a support group linked to Mr. Agyapong that emerged after the party’s presidential primary.

The petitioner argues that the group’s activities outside recognised party structures risk creating parallel influence systems and could weaken internal party cohesion.

It further cites remarks made during a media interview in which Mr. Agyapong reportedly suggested he possessed sensitive party information and could disclose it at a later date.

The petitioner contends that such statements have generated uncertainty within the party and among supporters, particularly amid concerns over his posture towards the NPP ahead of the 2028 elections.

Mr. Opoku also maintained that any allegations of wrongdoing or misconduct should be channelled through appropriate party structures or state institutions rather than being made publicly without formal follow-up.

He is therefore urging the National Executive Committee and other relevant organs of the party to review the petition and accompanying materials, including media reports and interview excerpts, and determine whether disciplinary action is necessary.

The development comes as the NPP continues internal restructuring and reconciliation efforts following its defeat in the 2024 general elections
