The indefinite strike by staff of the National Identification Authority (NIA) under the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) has been temporarily suspended, allowing national ID registration and related services to fully resume across the country from today, Monday, June 30, 2025.
The decision to suspend the industrial action follows days of negotiations involving the National Labour Commission (NLC), the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the Ministry of Finance, NIA management, and the leadership of the PSWU.
In a statement signed by Williams Ampomah E. Darlas, Head of the NIA’s Corporate Affairs Directorate, the Authority expressed appreciation to the Union for engaging constructively and reaffirmed its commitment to addressing workers’ concerns.
“Management acknowledges and appreciates the good faith demonstrated by the Union and wishes to assure all staff that their legitimate concerns remain a priority and will continue to receive the urgent attention they deserve,” the statement read.
The strike, declared in protest of delays in the payment of the 20% Operational Support Allowance, brought ID registration services to a halt nationwide, inconveniencing thousands.
Meanwhile, a separate statement from the Divisional Executive Council of the PSWU at the NIA confirmed that following the recent engagements, an agreement had been reached for the phased payment of the allowance.
Per the agreement, payments for July and August 2025 will be handled at the institutional level, while outstanding arrears from January to June.
Also, the September payment and subsequent entitlements, will be processed by the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department in September 2025.
The Union described the suspension of the strike as a show of good faith, aimed at giving room for the implementation of the agreed commitments.
However, it stressed that the suspension is temporary and contingent on full compliance with the timelines.
All NIA staff have been directed to report to duty on Monday, June 30, 2025, to ensure the smooth resumption of services.
The Authority reiterated its dedication to providing reliable, efficient, and high-quality identification services for all Ghanaians.
“All NIA offices and registration centres across the country will resume full operations on Monday, 30th June 2025.”
