The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kpone Katamanso, Samuel T.K. Morton, has disclosed that government plans to construct new regional landfill sites across the Greater Accra Region as part of efforts to phase out existing facilities that have exceeded their operational capacity.

According to him, the initiative forms part of a long-term 50-year waste management development project being championed by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim.

Mr. Morton revealed that the project’s technical committee is currently finalising design drawings and other technical requirements for submission to Cabinet for approval ahead of implementation.

He said lands have already been secured at Ayikuma, Sege and Paanor for the development of the new landfill facilities, which are expected to serve various parts of the Greater Accra Region.

Speaking in an interview with Rebecca Lartey, the MCE explained that the region would be divided into three waste management zones, with each landfill site designated to receive waste from specific areas.

Under the proposed arrangement, waste tricycle operators and collectors who currently dispose of refuse at the Kpone landfill site will be redirected to the new Ayikuma landfill facility once it becomes operational.

Mr. Morton noted that the Kpone landfill site has exceeded its designed capacity and outlived its usefulness, adding that plans are underway to decommission the facility and convert it into a waste-to-energy plant capable of generating various forms of energy.

The MCE also expressed concern over the growing incidence of indiscriminate dumping by some waste tricycle operators within the municipality, describing the practice as a major environmental challenge and a financial burden on the Assembly.

He disclosed that surveillance teams have been deployed to monitor illegal dumping activities and warned that operators found violating sanitation regulations would face prosecution.

Mr. Morton reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws and promoting proper waste management practices to ensure cleaner and healthier communities
