The newly constructed Weija Children’s Specialist Hospital in the Greater Accra Region has officially been handed over to management following the completion of construction works and installation of the required equipment.
The handover ceremony took place on Friday, August 7, 2026, with the facility formally transferred from the contractor through the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate and the Weija Gbawe Municipal Health Directorate to the hospital’s management.
The ceremony brought together representatives from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service headquarters, the Weija Gbawe Municipal Health Directorate and Hospital, as well as management and staff of the new specialist facility.
Representatives of Awerco Construction Limited, the contractor for the project, also attended the ceremony.
The Managing Director of Awerco Construction Limited, Mr Adams, confirmed that all contracted works and equipment had been completed and supplied within the agreed schedule.
He disclosed that discussions were ongoing with government over the provision of additional equipment that was not included in the original contract.
Staff training was also underway and was expected to be completed before the hospital begins full operations.
Receiving the keys and project documents on behalf of the Minister of Health, the Director of Infrastructure at the Ministry, Mr Nkansah Ampomah, commended all stakeholders for their contribution to the successful completion of the project.
He said operationalising the hospital would contribute to the achievement of universal health coverage by expanding access to specialised and critical healthcare services for children in the Greater Accra Region and beyond.
The Director of the Health Advocacy and Support Services Division of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Ebo Hammond, who represented the Director-General, however, cautioned that the successful handover of a health facility should not mark the end of efforts to ensure its sustainability.
He stressed the need for management to prioritise regular maintenance and proper management of the facility to preserve the investment.
Dr Hammond cited the Shai Osudoku District Hospital in Dodowa as an example of a health facility that has been properly maintained for more than a decade.
He urged the management of the new children’s hospital to adopt similar maintenance practices and reinvest revenue generated by the facility into improving service delivery.
The keys to the facility were subsequently handed from Dr Hammond to Mr Emmanuel Taadi, Deputy Director of Administration, who represented the Greater Accra Regional Director of Health Services.
Mr Taadi said the Regional Health Directorate was collaborating with relevant stakeholders to secure the hospital’s full complement of staff and the logistics required for effective operations.
He subsequently handed the keys to the Municipal Director of Health Services for the Weija Gbawe Municipality, Dr Jennifer Andoh, who presented them to the Medical Superintendent of the new hospital, Dr Nana Brako.
Receiving the keys on behalf of the hospital’s management and staff, Dr Brako expressed appreciation to all stakeholders involved in the project.
He pledged to work with staff and stakeholders to position the Weija Children’s Specialist Hospital as a leading centre for child health services in Ghana and across West Africa.
