Mood Digital Services Ltd (MDSL) has donated 50 HP laptops and a range of other information technology equipment to the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) to strengthen the Commission’s digital operations, regional activities and intelligence-gathering capabilities.

The donation, presented at the NACOC headquarters, is also intended to support efforts to combat the growing use of digital platforms in narcotics-related activities, including the coordination and trafficking of illicit drugs.

The items presented to the Commission include an industrial printer, two servers, two 2,000VA uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units, five projectors, a drone and drone bag, four all-in-one computers, 10 1,200VA UPS units and five iPads.

Receiving the items on behalf of NACOC, the Director-General, Major General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, expressed appreciation to the management of MDSL for supporting the Commission’s work.

He said the equipment would strengthen the Commission’s operational capacity and assured that the items would be put to effective use.

Maj Gen Obuba Mantey said the evolving nature of illicit drug trafficking, particularly the use of digital platforms by individuals involved in the trade, had become a growing concern for the Commission.

He said NACOC was working to respond to emerging trends in the narcotics trade and strengthen its capacity to detect and disrupt such activities.

“The menace of illicit drug trafficking and abuse which is now taking a different trend, especially the use of cyber line by persons involved in the act, has become a great concern to management,” he said.

He assured that the Commission would continue working to curb such activities and called on other companies and institutions to support NACOC’s efforts.

Maj Gen Mantey appealed to corporate organisations to consider partnerships with the Commission, particularly through technical and logistical support, to help address the growing challenges associated with drug trafficking in Ghana.

The Chief Executive Officer of MDSL, Daniel Afari, said the donation formed part of the company’s commitment to supporting institutions whose work has a direct impact on national development and public safety.

He stressed the importance of collaboration between technology companies and public institutions in strengthening the Commission’s ability to deliver on its mandate.

Mr Afari said the company’s support would not end with the latest donation, indicating plans to extend technical assistance to NACOC’s regional commands.

He said the objective was to improve the technological capabilities of the Commission across the country and ensure that its officers had the necessary tools to carry out their duties effectively.

Mr Afari also disclosed that MDSL intends to maintain its partnership with NACOC, particularly in relation to the proposed mandatory drug testing exercise.

He said the company was prepared to provide technical and logistical assistance to support the implementation of the exercise.

The donation comes as NACOC seeks to strengthen its technological capacity in response to changing methods of drug trafficking and abuse, including the use of digital tools and platforms.

The partnership between the Commission and MDSL is expected to provide additional technological support for NACOC’s intelligence, operational and regional activities.
