The government is reviewing the implementation of its model market projects to accelerate construction and ensure that contractors who fail to meet performance expectations are replaced, Local Government Minister Mahama Ayariga has announced.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, October 5, Mr Ayariga said the government had re-scoped the projects into phases to allow the stores and sheds to be completed first, with social amenities to follow as a second phase.
“We have re-scoped the market construction in phases to enable the early completion of the market stores and sheds component as phase one and the addition of the social amenities component as the second phase,” he said.
He said a committee had been established to assess the pace of work and the capacity of contractors working on the projects. Contractors found to lack the capacity to deliver would have their contracts terminated and reassigned to more competent firms.
Mr Ayariga also disclosed that negotiations had been completed to return contractors to site for the Kumasi Central Market Phase II and Takoradi Market Circle projects, while discussions were ongoing on Phase III of Kejetia Market.
