Majority demands Speaker declare Kpandai seat vacant after Tamale Court annuls election

Parliament is facing renewed political friction after the Majority Caucus called on Speaker Alban Bagbin to immediately declare the Kpandai seat vacant, following a Tamale High Court decision that annulled the 2024 parliamentary election in the constituency and ordered a fresh poll.

The court, ruling on a petition that cited irregularities in vote counting and collation, held that the results could not be allowed to stand and directed the Electoral Commission to conduct a rerun.

Both Parliament and incumbent MP Matthew Nyindam have been formally served.

Citing established precedent, particularly the James Gyakye Quayson case, Majority Chief Whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor argued that Nyindam must stop participating in parliamentary business until the rerun is held.

“Nobody can tell us in this house today that the Honourable Nyindam must have a voice today. It won’t happen,” he told Parliament.

But the Minority Caucus has fiercely condemned the Tamale High Court ruling, describing it as “deeply flawed” and “disconnected from the facts on the ground.”

They maintain that their candidate won the election “cleanly and decisively” and vowed to challenge the decision at the appellate level.
