Five people are missing after they were swept away by floodwaters at Dokutsekope in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region following hours of heavy rainfall.
One of the six victims was rescued by residents and volunteers and rushed to the Ngleshie Amanfro Polyclinic for medical treatment, while search-and-rescue efforts continue to locate the remaining five.
The incident occurred after torrential rains caused streams and drainage channels to overflow, triggering severe flooding in parts of the municipality.
According to eyewitnesses, the victims were attempting to cross a flooded section of the community when they were overpowered by the strong current.
Floodwaters have inundated homes, destroyed property and displaced dozens of residents, many of whom have sought refuge in safer locations.
The flooding has also affected nearby communities, including Gao Line and Kpormetey, where several houses remain submerged. Rescue teams have been using canoes to evacuate vulnerable residents, including children, the elderly and pregnant women.
Residents have appealed to the government, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other emergency agencies to deploy additional rescue personnel, boats, relief items and temporary shelters to support affected communities.
Authorities are expected to assess the full extent of the damage as the search for the five missing persons continues.
