President Mahama has declared that the victims of the tragic military helicopter crash will be honoured with a state funeral on Friday, August 15, 2025.
The ceremony will pay tribute to the high-profile officials and security officers who lost their lives in the disaster, including former Ashanti Regional Minister Hon. Dr. Samuel Sarpong and NADMO Deputy Director-General Samuel Aboagye.
The crash, which occurred earlier this week near Brofoyedu in the Ashanti Region, has plunged the nation into mourning.
In his announcement, President Mahama described the victims as patriots who served Ghana with dedication and distinction, adding that the state will ensure they are laid to rest with the dignity they deserve.
The government has also confirmed that preparations for the funeral are already underway, with a special committee tasked with coordinating the ceremony and supporting the bereaved families.
Investigations into the cause of the crash remain ongoing, with aviation authorities examining evidence, including a suspected black box recovered by local youth.
The state funeral will be attended by senior government officials, security chiefs, traditional leaders, and the public, as the nation comes together to honour the fallen.
“On Saturday, 9th August at 5pm, the nation will gather at the forecourt of the State House for an evening of reflection and memorial in honor of our departed colleagues. Books of condolences will be opened simultaneously at the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ghana Armed Forces Headquarters, and the National Democratic Congress Headquarters, and also the head office of NADMO.
From Sunday, 10th August to Thursday, 14th August. On Friday, 15th August, an interdenominational state funeral will be held for the eight heroes at the Black Star Square,” he said.
The crash claimed the lives of five high-ranking state officials and three military personnel. Among the victims were Minister for Defence Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East Samuel Aboagye, and NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong.
The three crew members, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah were also killed in the crash.
