Kristo Asafo Mission demands founder’s body amid burial dispute

The Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana has appealed to state authorities to intervene in an escalating dispute over the burial of its founder, warning that tensions among members could worsen if the matter is not handled in accordance with the law.

In a statement dated Thursday, July 30, 2026, the church said its leadership and governing bodies were not involved in the burial ceremony reportedly taking place at the Apostle Safo Suaye Centre at Gomoa Mpota.

According to the Mission, the funeral activities are being held despite a legal restriction obtained by the Aduana Kotoko Royal Family of Essumeja, which it said prohibits any burial or funeral arrangements at the location.

It added that the royal family had notified the police and other security agencies about the court order.

The church maintained that both the Apostle Safo Suaye Centre and the museum complex where the ceremony is reportedly being held are properties of the Kristo Asafo Mission. It alleged that some individuals had attempted to gain access to the facility without authorisation.

The statement said, “Hon. Adwoa Safo approached some facility Management Committee members of the Museum to demand the keys to the facility but was refused.”

It further alleged that the Mission had received reports of plans by some persons to unlawfully enter the premises.

The Mission also expressed concern over what it described as the inability of both its internal security structures and state security agencies to adequately protect the church’s facilities following the suspension of its internal security operations by the Ministry of the Interior.

Despite the developments, the church stressed that it would not resort to violence or acts of self-help.

“The Kristo Asafo Mission is not a Church noted for violence or public misbehavior or conduct and hence do not want to take the law into our own hands,” the statement said.

The Mission is therefore calling on the Ghana Police Service and other national security agencies to enforce the Accra High Court order issued on July 29, 2026, and ensure that all parties comply with the law.

It also addressed claims surrounding the burial arrangements, alleging that some members had raised concerns about the possibility of a substitute body being used during the ceremony.

The church insisted that the remains of its founder must be properly accounted for before any burial takes place.
