Four patients have become the first beneficiaries of treatment at the newly opened Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (Cath Lab) at the National Cardiothoracic Centre (NCTC) of the Korle- Bu Teaching Hospital in the Greater Accra Region.
The milestone was announced by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, who said the facility has begun providing critical cardiac services following the installation of the new equipment.
The Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory was installed through support from the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, and was inaugurated last week by President John Mahama as part of efforts to strengthen specialised healthcare delivery in Ghana.
The facility is expected to improve access to advanced cardiac procedures, reduce the need for patients to seek such services outside the country, and enhance the capacity of the National Cardiothoracic Centre to manage complex heart conditions.
Mr. Ofosu Kwakye said the commencement of treatments at the facility represents a significant step in expanding access to quality cardiac care for Ghanaians.
He noted that new Cath Lab forms part of broader efforts to improve medical infrastructure and provide modern healthcare services through strategic investments in critical areas of the health sector.
