Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson, has revealed that the departure of 1,324 Ghanaians from South Africa has disrupted some local economies, with reports indicating that businesses operated by Ghanaian nationals have collapsed in certain communities.
According to the Deputy Minister, the exit of the Ghanaian nationals has had economic consequences in areas where they previously contributed significantly through their businesses and commercial activities.
He noted that some communities have experienced a decline in economic activity following the departure of Ghanaian traders and entrepreneurs who played key roles in local markets and business networks.
The development comes amid ongoing efforts by the government to engage with Ghanaian nationals abroad and address challenges affecting their stay and livelihoods in host countries.
Mr Gyakye Quayson emphasised the importance of protecting the interests of Ghanaians in the diaspora while ensuring that migration-related issues are handled through diplomatic engagement.
He added that the government will continue to work with relevant authorities and stakeholders to support Ghanaian citizens abroad and promote safe, orderly, and beneficial migration.
