Police have arrested a 35-year-old Imam, Masud Abdullah, over alleged inciting comments he made about people who speak ill of Prophet Mohammed.
The arrest followed the circulation of a video in which Mr Abdullah is alleged to have made statements advocating violence against individuals who make disparaging remarks about the Prophet.
According to the Ghana Police Service, the suspect was arrested in a joint operation with the National Signals Bureau (NSB).
Police said Mr Abdullah allegedly made the remarks while delivering a sermon at a mosque at Ntensere in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region.
The arrest forms part of investigations into comments considered by the Police to have the potential to incite violence.
In a separate but related development, the Police Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team also arrested Daniel Junior Yaw Adjei, popularly known as Apostle Daniel JY Adjei, over a video in which he was allegedly seen making derogatory and offensive comments about Prophet Mohammed.
Both suspects are currently assisting with investigations and are expected to be taken through due process.
The Police Service said the arrests were necessary to address statements that could potentially encourage violence, while stressing that constitutional freedoms must be exercised responsibly.
The Police reminded religious leaders, preachers, community leaders and social media commentators that freedom of religion and expression does not provide a basis for encouraging people to harm others.
The Service warned that individuals who use public platforms to incite violence could face arrest and prosecution.
Investigations into the two cases are ongoing as the Police work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged comments.
The suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
