The Ghana Veterinary Medical Association (GVMA) has expressed full support for President John Mahama’s ‘Feed Ghana Programme‘, describing it as a major step toward strengthening food security, revitalizing poultry production, and creating sustainable jobs in agriculture.
In a statement, the Association commended the government for prioritizing agriculture in the 2025 budget and for the planned recruitment of 5,000 agriculture and veterinary graduates to support national food production.
It said this move would ensure that veterinary expertise is deployed directly to farming communities, improving livestock health and productivity.
The GVMA highlighted that the programme’s poultry component — the ‘Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti’ initiative — aligns with its mission to ensure a reliable supply of safe and nutritious animal protein.
The Association stressed that protecting livestock from diseases such as Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease is essential to Ghana’s food security agenda.
The Association pledged to support the implementation of the programme through on-farm veterinary care, vaccination campaigns, farmer education, and technical guidance on animal nutrition and welfare.
It also urged the government to address long-standing structural challenges facing the veterinary sector, including:
- Establishing an independent Veterinary Services Authority with regulatory powers.
- Upgrading veterinary offices and laboratories across the country.
- Improving working conditions and retention incentives for veterinary officers and animal health workers.
The GVMA called on farmers, local assemblies, and private stakeholders to collaborate with veterinary professionals to ensure the success of the Feed Ghana Programme.
“The GVMA is committed to providing the necessary professional expertise and oversight to ensure that this national endeavour not only increases food production but does so sustainably and safely, securing a nutritious future for Ghana,” it said, reaffirming its commitment to helping Ghana achieve a resilient and secure food system.
