The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has recorded US$11.6 billion in gold exports from the artisanal and small-scale mining sector between January 1 and October 20, 2026, surpassing earnings from large-scale gold exports over the same period.

GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi disclosed the figures at the Mining in Motion Conference on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, highlighting the sector’s contribution to foreign exchange inflows and Ghana’s economic activity.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the story is not different this year. In fact, it is better. The GoldBod remains on track to surpass last year’s outturn,” Mr Gyamfi said.

He said foreign exchange inflows from artisanal and small-scale gold mining continued to play an important role in the country’s foreign exchange market and reserve accumulation.

“FX inflows from the ASM sector continues to anchor FX intermediation, support reserve build-up and currency stability,” he stated.

The reported US$11.6 billion in exports covers the period from the beginning of the year to October 20. According to the figures presented by the GoldBod chief executive, earnings from the artisanal and small-scale mining sector had exceeded those from large-scale gold exports over the same period.

The figures highlight the contribution of artisanal and small-scale mining to Ghana’s gold export earnings and the supply of foreign exchange.

Foreign exchange inflows provide access to currencies used to pay for imports and meet other international obligations. They can also contribute to the accumulation of the country’s foreign reserves and support efforts to maintain currency stability.

Mr. Gyamfi said GoldBod remained on course to exceed its previous year’s performance, although the statement did not provide a final year-end projection.

The latest figures cover only the period ending October 20, 2026, and do not represent the full-year export total.

GoldBod’s reported performance places the artisanal and small-scale mining sector at the centre of Ghana’s gold export earnings for the period under review.

Further figures on total gold export volumes, the value of large-scale mining exports and the sector’s contribution to overall foreign exchange receipts would provide additional context for assessing the performance.

Mr. Gyamfi also said the Board’s performance in 2026 followed a strong showing in 2025, when artisanal and small-scale gold exports generated about US$10.8 billion in foreign exchange.

According to figures he presented, GoldBod had exported 85.4 tonnes of small-scale gold by October 20, 2026, compared with 76 tonnes from the large-scale mining sector. The large-scale exports were valued at US$11.1 billion, against US$11.6 billion from the artisanal and small-scale mining sector.

The figures indicate that the small-scale sector had surpassed large-scale mining in both the volume and value of gold exports during the period under review.
