The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has on Wednesday, August 27, rolled out a special incentive scheme to support licensed miners and counter gold smuggling across the country.
According to GoldBod, licensed miners will now earn an additional GH¢832 per pound of gold sold to the Board.
This bonus has pushed the local price of gold from GH¢8,868 to GH¢9,700 per pound.
GoldBod’s Media Relations Officer, Prince Minkah, explained that the decision was taken in response to mounting concerns from licensed miners, who have seen local gold prices fall in recent months due to the strengthening of the Ghana cedi.
He stressed that the incentive was designed to protect miners who have been key to boosting Ghana’s gold output and foreign exchange earnings.
The Board has directed its licensed traders nationwide to make immediate and transparent payments of the new bonus to miners who sell their gold through official channels.
Industry analysts say the move could improve compliance, reduce smuggling, and stabilize Ghana’s gold trade at a time when the sector remains critical to national revenue.
