The Supreme Court has unanimously dismissed four constitutional suits challenging the President’s discretionary authority and the procedures used in the suspension and removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.

According to Legal Affairs Correspondent Murtala Inusah of the EIB Network, the seven-member panel, chaired by Justice Amadu Tanko, held that the actions were unmeritorious and failed to raise issues warranting constitutional interpretation.

The Court first dismissed consolidated suits filed by Old Tafo Member of Parliament Vincent Assafuah and Theodore Atta Quartey.

It also dismissed a separate action filed by former Chief Justice Torkornoo against the five-member committee that investigated petitions leading to her removal.

That case had earlier been consolidated with a suit filed by the Centre for Citizenship, Constitutional and Electoral Systems (CENCEM LBG).

The apex court held that the processes under challenge were lawful and consistent with constitutional provisions governing such procedures.

The Court further indicated that full written judgments in all four cases will be made available by 12:00 noon.
