The Ghana Education Service (GES) has warned schools over the collection of unauthorized levies, clarifying that all PTA fees must follow official approval processes.
According to a statement on Wednesday, October 22 signed by Head of Public Relations at GES, Daniel Fenyi, no school has the authority to demand PTA or development contributions without clearance from the relevant educational authorities.
According to GES, basic schools must secure approval from the District Education Oversight Committee (DEOC) through the District Director of Education, while second-cycle institutions must obtain authorization from the Regional Director of Education.
Fenyi emphasized that even approved levies remain strictly voluntary, and no student should be denied access to school services or benefits for failing to pay.
He also made it clear that GES staff—including heads of schools and teachers—must not participate in collecting any PTA fees.
To ensure compliance, GES has directed all regional and district directors to actively monitor schools and report any breaches, with immediate disciplinary action for violations.
