Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, son of Ghana’s founding President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has died in Cairo, Egypt, following a prolonged illness, the Nkrumah family has announced.

In a statement, the family said Gamal passed away peacefully while receiving care at a rehabilitation centre in Cairo, where he had been recovering after suffering a stroke.

Gamal was a respected journalist, writer and intellectual who devoted much of his life to examining the political, social and cultural developments shaping Africa and the wider world.

The family described him as a man of profound intellectual curiosity, independent thought and quiet conviction, who upheld the values of justice, human dignity, African unity and international solidarity.

It said he carried forward the legacy of his father in his own distinctive way while building a reputation grounded in his personal principles and professional achievements.

The Nkrumah family described his death as a profound loss not only to relatives and loved ones but also to colleagues, friends and readers who valued his insights, humanity and engagement with major issues of his time.

The family said it remembered Gamal with love, gratitude and pride, adding that his wisdom, kindness and commitment to his beliefs would remain an enduring source of inspiration.

It also expressed appreciation to the medical professionals and caregivers in Cairo who supported him throughout his illness, as well as to the governments and people of Ghana and Egypt for their assistance.

The family has appealed for privacy as it mourns the loss, describing the death as a deeply personal bereavement.

It said details of memorial arrangements and opportunities for the public to pay tribute to Gamal’s life and legacy would be communicated in due course.

The statement ended with a prayer for his eternal peace.
