Five students of Kade Senior High Technical School (SHTS) have been remanded by the Kade District Court in the Eastern Region for their roles in the assault of a teacher during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The court, presided over on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, ordered that four of the accused persons, all above 18 years, be remanded into prison custody after they pleaded guilty to the charges.
The fifth accused, a 17-year-old juvenile, was remanded into police custody, with his case set to be handled separately by a Juvenile Court.
The accused students are alleged to have brutally assaulted Michael Quayson, a teacher at Kade SHTS, following what authorities described as strict invigilation during the WASSCE.
All five accused persons are expected to reappear before the court on January 20, 2026.
Scenes of emotion unfolded at the court premises after the ruling, as family members and some of the accused persons broke down in tears while being escorted into a police vehicle and driven away.
Commenting on the development, the Ghana Education Service (GES) in a statement said, the court’s decision underscores the state’s commitment to protecting teachers and safeguarding the integrity of national examinations.
“This demonstrates the level at which the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service can go to safeguard and protect the welfare of teachers, and uphold the integrity of the WASSCE,” said Daniel Fenyi, Public Relations Officer of the GES.
