It was a moment of drama outside the Accra International Airport (AIA) in the Greater Accra Region when US-based Ghanaian Erwin Asamoah Boateng, who had returned from abroad, was unexpectedly surrounded by traditional rulers and enstooled as chief.
In a video sighted by Overseeronline.com on September 28, 2026, the US-based Ghanaian Marine veteran and philanthropist Erwin Boateng was carrying his bags and leaving the airport when a group of men suddenly rushed towards him and held him tightly.
The situation appeared to have surprised the man, who looked visibly confused and seemed unsure of what was happening after he was held.
An elderly woman dressed in traditional cloth then poured powder on his head, a practice associated with enstoolment in some Ghanaian traditions, as drumming and celebrations continued.
Boateng was subsequently carried shoulder-high and placed in a car parked at the airport premises.
Some of the young men and women who had accompanied the traditional rulers could be seen singing and celebrating as the ceremony continued.
Born in Ghana and raised across Italy, Germany and Denmark, Boateng moved to the United States shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks.
In 2008, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps, serving in various capacities, including combat deployments to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
He also managed substantial US government assets while stationed in the Washington area, with duties that included assignments associated with the Pentagon.
His military service earned him several decorations, including the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, NATO Medal for service with the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
After leaving active duty, Boateng embarked on a second career as an entrepreneur and philanthropist.
In 2013, he founded Quality Health Africa, a nonprofit organization focused on strengthening healthcare systems through facility support, community programmes, education and public awareness campaigns. Its work began with health fairs and medical-supply donations in Ghana, including support for the Bosuso Health Centre.
He also established the Erwin Boateng Community Center to provide after-school education and recreational opportunities for children in underserved communities.
Through these initiatives, Boateng has consistently connected the discipline and experience gained from military service with his commitment to creating practical opportunities and improving lives in Africa.
That combination of military service, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy recently culminated in an unexpected homecoming.
