There was a confrontation at the premises of the Accra High Court on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, when officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) reportedly attempted to take the Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, into custody.
The incident occurred as the MP, who is also a lawyer, was at the court to represent his client, Salomey Awity Baffoe, in a case linked to the controversial “Ghana Jollof” TikTok account.
Videos of the incident show a woman who identified herself as an EOCO official asking the MP to accompany her.
The MP resisted the attempt and insisted that EOCO should communicate with Parliament and, specifically, the Speaker, Alban Bagbin.
He subsequently drove away from the court premises, with the officials reportedly following him.
According to sources close to the MP, EOCO’s reported action may be connected to claims that Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah had failed to honour invitations from the office in relation to investigations into the Ghana Jollof TikTok account.
The sources, however, maintain that the MP had not received any invitation from EOCO.
They further alleged that the attempted arrest was linked to his public defence of Salomey Baffoe, whose case has attracted significant public attention.
Salomey Baffoe, a 40-year-old senior nursing officer from Techiman in the Bono East Region, was arrested on September 13 and subsequently remanded by the Adentan Circuit Court over alleged links to the Ghana Jollof TikTok account operated by Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, who is currently believed to be in the United Kingdom.
The prosecution alleges that Baffoe assisted Kodua in distributing videos published on the account and recruited others to circulate the content.
Police have also alleged that there were financial transactions between the two women in connection with the dissemination of the content.
Baffoe has pleaded not guilty to a charge of abetment of crime, to wit, publication of false news.
Her lawyer, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has strongly challenged the circumstances surrounding her arrest and the prosecution’s case.
Following Baffoe’s arrest, the MP questioned why she had been detained when authorities had told the court that the alleged operator of the Ghana Jollof account was in the United Kingdom.
He has also criticised the manner in which his client was arrested. Reports indicate that Baffoe was taken from her home in Hansua, Techiman Municipality, late at night by persons who identified themselves as National Security operatives.
Her family subsequently raised concerns about her whereabouts.
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has previously described the circumstances of Baffoe’s arrest as more than an ordinary arrest, arguing that it amounted to an “abduction.”
He has also accused the authorities of pursuing his client as part of efforts to identify and apprehend the person behind the Ghana Jollof account.
The prosecution, however, maintains that its investigations have uncovered links between Baffoe and the Ghana Jollof account and says it has evidence, including financial transactions and information retrieved from mobile devices, to support its allegations.
The circumstances surrounding the reported encounter between EOCO officials and the MP remain unclear.
It is yet to be established publicly whether EOCO formally invited Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the specific offence for which it intended to arrest him, or whether the office had obtained any legal process authorising the reported action.
EOCO had not publicly commented on the incident as of publication.
